Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
The gentle yellow glow of the lantern lit the darkness just beyond my feet. The African night was as black as the deep caves along the river bank and I could not see a single star in the vast darkness above me. Step by step I slowly made my way down the sandy path to my sick friend’s mud house, the warm broth in my thermos sloshing softly.
I had walked this path before, but tonight without a light I would have been lost in the wild savanna.
I needed the light of the lamp to show me where to place my feet, to avoid stepping off the path. I needed the light that blazed forth just a small distance ahead of me to inform me what direction I was headed, whether I was on the right path, headed safely to my destination. Without the lamp I could not be sure of my footing. Without its light I could not be sure of my path.
Our secure footing on the right path is essential to life. God’s Word provides both. Each day as we hold forth its lamp, we will see clearly where to place our feet. Each day as we shine its light in our hearts, we will know the right path, we will be able to rest secure that we are headed in the right direction.
I will always see that golden lantern light helping me find my way in the darkness when I consider the words of Psalm 119:105. May you see it in your mind’s eye too today.
Lord, help me discipline myself to seek your lamp and light daily by spending time in Your Word before I embark on life’s path. Amen.
