The Nothing Space

The Nothing Space

The other day a poem poured out onto my computer screen.  I don’t know where the words came from but there they were.  I was in the middle of writing an email to a friend who is struggling with some unmanageable things in her life.  They are situations that she can’t do anything about…. except trust.  I wanted to encourage her back to faith, but all I could think of was, “I’ll pray for you.”

I sat back, staring at the computer screen.  The half-written email reminded me of familiar helpless feelings that I’ve known all too well.  In the past, I’ve been in the position of complete inability to solve a particular problem.  I’ve been in that “nothing space”.   I know what’s it’s like to look around and see no options, no hope, no developments, no open doors, no direction ….. just nothing space!  Yet I’ve learned over the years that the nothing space can be exactly where God wants us at times.  I don’t like that He allows this, but our faith must be stretched and strengthened.  He wants us to understand that we can do nothing without Him and most of all, that He is trustworthy and faithful.

I am sharing the poem that appeared on my screen because you too, were on my heart as I wrote it:

The Nothing Space

Lifting pleas and prayers in this nothing place

No hope can be seen in the wide open space

After wondering, wandering to fill what I crave

The nothing space grows with nothing to save

My need I can’t have, what I want I can’t see

The emptiness promises nothing to me

No person to “get this” or take this away

No crutch to hold onto, no right words to say

I face the invisible and silently fear

No answer, no changes, just helplessness here

Forced to surrender and no longer try

Is this where He wants me …. incapably dry?

When nothing is everywhere and efforts don’t earn

The futility prompts me to finally learn

He is God, He is faithful and won’t share His glory

He alone will work out the end to my story

As always it has, His Word will still stand

He’ll do what He says and what He has planned

He’ll prove that I’ve never been out of His care

If “nothing” could speak, it would say He is there

I’ll see the results though they won’t be my own

With God filling the space, I’m never alone

God’s plan is unfolding by His power and grace

And His glory overwhelms the nothing space

My friend, I pray that God’s glory overwhelms your nothing space!

  1. LOVE this, Laurie. A poetic way to talk about that time when we wonder what God is doing in our life.

  2. Cherie, Finally I’ve reached the point where I know He’s working, even when I see nothing. I used to think nothing was nothing, now I know God is in control!
