That’s Christianity for You!

That’s Christianity for You!

“That’s Christianity for You!” These were the words that someone posted in response to a Facebook post that I had on one of my fan pages about a mother who was denied a funeral at a Denver church because she was gay or had an “alternative lifestyle”. My response, “a sad truth … just way too judgmental in the name of “Christ” that’s not Christ-like at all … ”. Her words hurt because I’m a Christian and she was right!

Love_4I respect the Church’s position on deciding not to do the funeral, however, I do not agree with it. I once heard someone say that if Jesus was with us today, some of his friends and acquaintances would be the very people who the church rejects … wow! The bible says to love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8, NIV) In the New International Version of the bible, love is mentioned 686 times. One of my favorite scriptures on love is 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, which speaks of the importance of love; that I may speak eloquently but if I do not love, my words are a mere clanging cymbal – how, annoying is that. That I may have the gift of prophecy and can comprehend mysteries and knowledge and can have the kind of faith that moves mountains, but if I do not have love – I have nothing. And that it does not matter if I give all that I have to the poor or even sacrifice my body to hardship that if I do not have love, I gain nothing. The chapter ends with, “and now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Love_3

Talk about love in action. Had this Pastor allowed the funeral to continue despite him or the Church not agreeing with this woman’s lifestyle, imagine the impression this would have made to all in attendance. What a witness for Christ this could have been! Just because we as Christians show love to those who are hurting does not mean that we agree with the sin that they may be entangled in – it simply means we love them as a person. Just because we show love and compassion for a person who may be living an “alternative lifestyle” does not mean that we have to agree with or approve of their lifestyle, loving them simply means that we are following God’s word to love deeply because it covers a multitude of sin.
